Learning 2.0 [Thing 15]

OK. so I lied when I said that I was finished. I've been putting off Thing 15 because it seems like it's really boring, buutttt since it's the last one I have to do it!

The article I most agree with is the one that talks about how L2.0 is good for improving ways to communicate. L2.0 provides people with a way to share knowledge and get some in return. It does go all over the Internet instead of staying in just one part. It enables people to stay in touch who can work together to build a better library community. If everything continues at the rate that it's going, L2.0 is going to be HUGE.

FINISHED! [Thing 23]!!

Woohoo! I'm finally finished!

For some reason this took a lot longer than I expected it to, but it was worth it. I learned a lot of new things through this program and I'm glad that we were able to take part in this.
Learning 2.0 gave me a change to sit down and take the time to go through things that I've been wanting to do for a while. I found out about Flickr through here and I love it so much! I learned about Technorati [and I've been seeing tons of things linked back to there recently], and I finally learned what an RSS feed was!
I will definitely be taking a lot away from this experience and using it all in the future. The new skills learned here will really help me become a better lifelong learner. If another program similar to this was offered, I'd certainly do it.

Audiobooks [Thing 22]

I've wanted to try out Audiobooks for a really long time now. It turns out that I can't download them from home [I have a mac], so I'll have to find somewhere else to do it from! I had no idea that there were so many books available for download. When I find somewhere, I'm going to DL The Weather Makers: [How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life On Earth] because I'm doing a project on Global Warming and because I'm just really interested in it.

Podcasts! [Thing 21]

Podcasts aren't new to me at all. I subscribe to tons of podcasts including National Geographic and Askheychris and I make my own too! I usually get my podcasts from itunes, so I couldn't connect and add them on here. Podcasts are fun and a good way to pass the time [by listening or making them!]. Library podcasts could be very useful to tell patrons about new books or changes in their libraries.

Technorati [Thing 14]

I think Technorati is really cool! I found my own personal blog on there by accident, and the other day I got a comment from someone who found it on there too! I thought that that was pretty cool since I had learned what that was with Learning 2.0. Even though a lot of the things I searched didn't come up with the results I wanted, I could see how this would be a useful tool. The popular tags had some interesting stuff in them. The Awkwardness Survival Guide was really funny and PostSecret was on there too.

Thing 13

I'm not a huge fan of Del.icio.us. There's not much to do one there except for check out websites that other people used, but you only get to see the really popular ones that you already know about.

It could be helpful for research topics though. If there was a school project going on and all the websites on that topic were in one place, it could save people a lot of time that they'd spend wandering around the library trying to find something with their topic.

Library Success [Thing 16]

I chose the Library Success Wiki. http://www.libsuccess.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

I like this one because there's one section where librarians can enter their AIM screen name. I'm always looking for new people to talk to and these people are from all over the country!

There are a lot of useful things under here for librarians to use, and they're all under detailed lists so that you can directly get to what you want.

PB Wiki [Thing 17]

I really like PB Wiki! When I first went, I immediately went to the "Favorite Music" section to see if anyone was there who had similar tastes in music. I form really strong friendships with people who have the same taste in music as I do. I didn't find anyone who had exactly the same taste, but I found someone with a few similar artists. I also added to the Favorite Movie page.

This is a really good site and it's pretty simple to use.

Zoho Writer [Thing 18]

Zoho Writer has probably been the most confusing "thing" I've done on here. I didn't really understand what it did for a while. When it finally clicked I realized how convenient it was. It seems like a good tool, but I wish there were more obvious instructions and explanations. I didn't even see the first document they made for me that explained it until about 10 minutes after I clicked around trying to figure out what the purpose of Zoho Writer. I'm not sure that I would use Zoho Writer outside of L2.0, but you never know.

Consumating.com [Thing 19]

For this "thing", we were supposed to explore one site out of a super long list of award winning sites. After searching almost all of them, I've decided to write about consumating.com. Consumating is a social networking site that joins people by tages they use to describe themselves. There is also a rating system for people too. Instead of spending hours browsing through hundreds of people to find someone with common interests like one might on myspace.com, you just type in a tag and everyone who entered that tag when they describe themselves comes up. The site also has various questions to answer in a clever and witty way. I signed up for an account [couldn't help it] and it's pretty good for late night net time on the weekends. Other than that I don't use it much.

The only use for this that I could see in a library setting is joining people who care about the library together.

You Tube [Thing 20]

It's been a while since I last posted. We got really busy, but I'm trying hard to catch up!

OK. So for Thing 20 we were supposed to explore YouTube. This isn't even close to being my first time using this site. I'm a teenager, so I'm on here quite a bit.

My video is of an acoustic song by My Favorite Highway when they played at Jammin Java in Vienna, VA. MFH is one of my favorite bands. They're unsigned as of now, but they're amazingly good, so it won't be long until they are. I chose this video because I went to this show a while ago and had an amazing time with my best friend. Dave (lead singer and guy playing acoustic guitar) played this new song and it's absolutely wonderful.

YouTube could possibly be used for Library Instructional Videos, but I'm not sure what else the library could use them for.

Rollyo [Thing 12]

Rollllllyyyyooooooooo!

haha whenever I say Rollyo, I have to say it like that.

My Rollyo is for Music News and Photos [go figure].

Honestly, I didn't really like this tool. I didn't even understand the concept at first. I like google/blingo a lot more. It gets the job done and I don't have to compile a list of "trusted sources".

Library Thing

I really like Library Thing. I could seriously spend hours just browsing books and finding new books to read [I'm always looking for good new books, but i have different tastes in books than all of my friends]. It's pretty simple to use. I just couldn't figure out how to get it displayed on the side of my page. Oh well.

My Library Thing!

Gooogie.co.uk [Thing 10]

Evidently, I'm the best at everything.

Haha. OK. So this is my second attempt at the whole generator deal. This one cracked me up. gooogie.co.uk is a lot of fun and it's really easy to use too!

[I'm Felicia btw.]

Finding Feeds [Thing 9]

I'm not really a fan of the feed finding sites. I didn't think any of them were that interesting. Out of all of them, Feedster was probably the best. I think the reason I didn't like the feed finder was because I just like browsing for interesting article titles. I don't like having to think about what I want to read about and then searching for it. The sites weren't even that good for looking up people [I'm a lurker. Sue me.] in webpages and blogs. Oh well I suppose.

If I HAD to use a feed finder, I'd use Feedster.

RSS [Thing 8]

http://www.bloglines.com/public/onepageatatime

RSS feeds really simplify things! I thought this was going to be really difficult, but it wasn't at all. I will def. be using this for my own personal use. This will save me time searching around and checking up on my frequently visited websites. Libraries could use this to provide patrons with up-to-date information on various topics.

Ohhh Technology [Thing 7]

For this blog, we're supposed to blog about anything technology related. Since I pretty much live on my computer, I suppose I will blog about that.

I have currently have an ibook g4 and i love it.

----

OK. So I've changed my mind about what this blog is about. Instead of writing about how much I love my computer, I'm going to write about how much I hate how fast technology changes. I just looked up my ibook g4 on mac.com to find a link or a picture when I discovered that they don't sell them anymore! They have been replaced by the new "PowerMac"s. Yeahyeahyeah. That's cool and everything, but I bought this computer over the summer for the same price as the new powermac and the powermac has more stuff than my current computer does! There isn't even a help site for my computer that I could find [in my panic/fury]. The new powermac even has an isight and computer software that goes with it. To get an isight and software now, I'd have pay an additional $180! This is ridiculous! Why am I being punished because I bought a computer before I knew that I new one was coming out the next month FOR THE SAME PRICE. My mom is going to buy a new computer [I am trying to convince her to get a powermac now], but what's to say that after she buys that they won't come out with a "superpowermac" or a "superduperpowermac"?? When do the upgrades stop and the people who bought previous products get something?
Now I know I shouldn't be complaining. I should have known that technology changes and gets more advanced every day. But still! I didn't even know they didn't carry my computer anymore! At first I thought that the powermac was new, but they still had the ibook. It's too late to return my computer, so I'll just have to be bitter about it I guess. Or fork up the money and get everything already included with the ohsogreat powermac.

Oh wait. Maybe I can convince my mom to get the powermac and then teach her how to use my computer and switch?! oooo clever clever. She doesn't want the extra stuff that the powermac comes with and I do. I guess it all works out.

I got pretty off topic in this blog. I guess what I'm trying to say is that technology changes a little too often for my taste. It seems like you can't buy something without a better version coming out the next day.

I actually made a bunch of mosaics, but this one is my favorite. It is full of things that I love. Bright contrasting colors, cameras, french fries, cats, and city lights make me smile no matter what.
I really like making mosiacs using Flickr pictures!!

P.S. In case you were wondering [and i know that you are], the walls in my room are the same orange as the walls in the picture with the blue ariplane sign in the third column, second row. woohoo for bright colors!!

Exploring Flickr! [Thing 5]

This was probably the worst possible blog option for me. I tend to be really indecisive and I couldn't decide on a picture that I wanted to write about. It's taken me literally a week to finally decide on one, and then the one I chose didn't have the "blog this!" option on it. So I decided that I would blog about this photo and then put the links up for the other ones. =]

I chose this photo because when I saw it, I instantly fell in love with it. It reminds me of summer and having fun with my best friend. It reminds me of the feeling of freedom when you know that you can stay out all night and don't have to get up early the next day or when you have the entire day to do whatever you want. I like the color effect as well.

The other photos I chose were:
1. http://www.flickr.com/photos/superscarymary/354271006/
2. http://www.flickr.com/photos/moshdesigner/349265552/
3. http://www.flickr.com/photos/malingering/347784826/

[1 was my originial choice, but there isnt a blog option with it.]

I love all four of those photos and about 50 million other ones. I now spend a lot of time just browsing Flickr photos.

7 1/2 Lifelong Learning Habits

The 7 1/2 Habits of Lifelong Learners are very good habits to adopt. The easiest habit for me will probably be Habit #6: Use technology to your advantage. I'm a senior in high school and some sort of technology is necessary for almost everything I do. I'm always plugged into my ipod and I live on my computer [sad fact haha]. All-in-all, technology is pretty much my middle name.
The hardest habit for me to adopt will be Habit #3: View problems as challenges. I'm usually an optimistic person, but every so often problems will just be problems to me. I'd like to say that I take something away from every situation, but sadly, that isn't the case. I'll try to work on that one though.
I already practice the rest of the habits, so I guess I'm ready to be a lifelong learner!

First Post!

Hello everyone!
My name is Felicia and I'm a Page at the Purcellville Library. The name "One Page at a Time" was my attempt at being clever, but I'm not sure it worked out so well. =]
This isn't my first time using a blog [I have one on Livejournal.com], but I'm still hoping to learn a few things through the Learning 2.0 program. I look forward to reading everyone's blogs and I hope you all enjoy mine!
